Our hide comes from Conceria Monteverdi in Tuscany — one of just eighteen tanneries in Italy certified to produce 100% vegetable-tanned full-grain leather, out of more than eleven hundred.
No sourcing agent, no licensing fee, no name stamped on the back. We fly to Tuscany and pick the hides by hand, so the money goes into the material rather than the branding.

I grew up surrounded by the smell of Italian vegetable-tanned leather. For nearly twenty years my father has been in the leather trade, and he is the person I have always looked up to. He went to Florence with barely any family support and just enough money for one semester of language school — and came back to Hong Kong fluent in Italian, trading the material he had fallen for.
Now it is my turn to use what he passed down.

That is me at Monteverdi as a teenager, being taught to hand-stain a hide — working the stain across the leather by hand so it takes evenly, one panel at a time. To be clear about what you are watching: hand staining is a finishing step, not the vegetable tanning our cases come from, and this was a decade ago. Take it as a family photograph rather than a production video.
I include it because it is the plainest proof of the thing I keep claiming: I have been walking into this building since I was a boy.
The family that runs Monteverdi has known mine for most of my life — long before any of this was a brand. That is the whole reason we can buy the way we do: in person, off the stack, from the people who actually made it.
It is not a supply chain so much as a standing arrangement between two families, and it is the part of this business I would least like to replace with a purchase order.
A stamped name adds nothing to the leather and a great deal to the price. We would rather put that money into the hide — and leave the surface clear for the patina you are going to put there yourself.
So that is where we start — with the animal, the bark, the water, and the weeks it takes. Everything else on this page follows from the material.
A raw hide arrives at Monteverdi with everything still on it — the grain, the growth marks, the scars from a life outdoors. Nothing is sanded off to make it uniform. What you see on your case is exactly how the leather was in the first place.
No chrome. No accelerants. The hides sit in pits of natural tannin drawn from tree bark, then hang to dry in open air. It takes weeks instead of hours — which is precisely why most of the industry abandoned it.
Cheaper leather is buffed smooth and sprayed with a pigment film — a plastic skin over a sanded surface. Ours keeps its top layer intact, so the colour sits in the fibre rather than on top of it, and the surface can keep breathing and changing.
Of more than 1,100 tanneries in Italy, only eighteen are certified by the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale to produce 100% vegetable-tanned full-grain leather. Monteverdi is one of them.
No sourcing agent, no middleman, no licensing fee. We fly to Tuscany and go through the stacks ourselves — checking the grain, the thickness, the way a panel takes the light. Then the hides come straight to us.
Each case is cut as a single piece, so there is no join to peel and no stitching to fray. The raw edges are burnished by hand until they seal and shine. Because every panel comes from a different part of a different hide, no two cases are the same.
No animal is raised for a phone case. The hides we buy exist because of the beef industry — they are what is left over when the meat has been taken, and without tanneries they are waste to be disposed of. Turning that into something a person keeps for a decade strikes us as the better outcome.
Nothing is farmed for leather here. The raw material is a by-product of food production that would otherwise be discarded.
Vegetable tanning uses tannins drawn from tree bark rather than chromium salts, so what leaves the tannery is not heavy-metal effluent.
Small batches, made as they are ordered. We are not producing stock that gets marked down and written off at the end of a season.
We are not going to call a leather case eco-friendly. It is an animal product, and it was shipped to you. What we can say plainly is this: the hide already existed, the tanning is the old low-impact method, and the case is built to outlast ten of the plastic ones.
A coated case cannot do this. The film on top blocks all three — which is why it looks the same on day one and day five hundred, right up until it starts to peel.
Small scratches appear almost immediately. That is intended, not a defect — on full-grain they settle into the surface rather than sitting on top of it, and within a month most have disappeared into the tone.
It arrives paler than it will end up. Within weeks the corners, the edges and the spot your fingers land begin to darken — the case starts mapping the way you specifically hold a phone.
The tone has gone deep and uneven in the way only real use produces. Two people carrying the same colour now own two visibly different objects. Yours is unmistakably yours.
You are paying for the leather. Not the logo.
