Monteverdi

One tannery. One family. 70+ years of experience

Why Monteverdi?

Our search for honest leather ended at a single conceria in Fucecchio, near Florence. Monteverdi is one of only eighteen tanneries in Italy certified to make 100% vegetable-tanned, full-grain leather — and it has been run by the same family for over a hundred years. We buy from them directly, pick every hide ourselves.

The Place

Tanned the Tuscan way

In the Fucecchio region, leather has been tanned with bark and water for centuries. Monteverdi still works this way — slowly, patiently.

The Process

Bark, water, and time

No chrome. No shortcuts. The hides are tanned slowly with natural tannins until the leather is rich, full-grained, and alive — a process most factories abandoned for speed.

The Standard

Among the rare few

Of more than eleven hundred tanneries in Italy, only eighteen are certified to produce 100% vegetable-tanned full-grain leather. Monteverdi is one of them — and that certification is the whole reason we are here.

The Relationship

Generations in the making

I grew up around this leather. The family that runs Monteverdi has known mine since I was a boy — long before any of this became a brand. We still buy the way we always have: in person, from the people who make it.

Hand-Picked

Bought directly from the owner and selected by hand at the tannery. No middlemen, no guesswork.

Hides drying slowly at the tannery

Tanned Slowly

Bark, water, and weeks of time. Slowness is what gives the leather its depth and its patina.

The Proof

Certified, piece by piece

Every piece leaves the workshop with its own numbered certificate from the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale — the mark of those eighteen tanneries. The number on the card matches the stamp pressed into the leather.
